Most dairy units have more than one mastitis bug

31 July 2008

Over 80% of dairy units are wrestling with more than one mastitis organism on the farm.

New 2007/2008 VLA Farmfile data - which allows analysis of the different mastitis bacteria present in each herd, rather than in individual cows - shows that of 590 farms that submitted more than one mastitic milk sample to regional VLA Centres over the last year, cows on 487 units had been challenged by multiple pathogens. Around one in three farms had three to four organisms implicated, whereas 2% of holdings had as many as five or more with which to contend.
