Rabbit Awareness Week (RAW) 2011

6 April 2011

Rabbit Awareness Week (RAW) 2011 supported by Panacur rabbit, which hops off in May 23-29 this year, is calling on Briton’s to support this year’s awareness campaign, following shock rabbit-related figures released recently. A survey by the PDSA highlighted the plight of Britain’s 1,669,000 rabbits with alarming figures such as 44% are not registered with a vet, 67% live alone and a neglected 6% never leave their hutch in their lifetime! 30% of rabbit owners even confessed that owning rabbits is harder work than they had initially thought.

The good news is RAW, a yearly awareness drive that aims to improve the health and welfare of Britain’s bunnies, is promoting free health checks for rabbits as well as urging both owners and vet practices alike to get involved in the initiative.

This May, RAW is focusing on raising awareness of rabbits’ mental and emotional health. Unhappy rabbits that are bored, frustrated or frightened tend to develop behavioural problems, such as hiding, decreased grooming or aggression. This can be due to a number of issues, including lack of appropriate company. With the support of the pet and vet community, our primary aim is to educate owners in responsible rabbit ownership and improve the wellbeing of Britain’s bunnies.
