Exzolt® for Backyard chickens
Parasite Control
Product Description
Poultry red mite (Dermanyssus gallinae) is a blood-feeding ectoparasite that has significant welfare and production implications for chickens.
Mites will feed on chickens during the night and then hide in the cracks and crevices of chicken coops during the day. This nocturnal nature, combined with the subtle initial signs presented by the chickens, means it is possible for infestations to go unrecognised for long periods of time.
Mite bites are painful and induce skin irritation, contributing to high stress levels in infested birds.
Until now, tackling the issue of PRM in backyard flocks has been challenging. There have been limited treatment options with packaging of licensed and effective treatments mainly aimed at large commercial units

Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I prescribe Exzolt?
Exzolt is an effective treatment for chickens against poultry red mite. Mite bites are painful and will cause skin irritation and stress to chickens. In high numbers they can leave them susceptible to disease and even cause death due to blood loss. Mites can also bite people causing irritation.
Do owners need to throw the eggs away during treatment?
No, there is no need to stop eating the eggs during treatment as Exzolt has a zero withdraw period. There is no need for owners to limit contact with their chickens.
How long does Exzolt last?
Exzolt kills mites that feed on treated chickens for 14 days following the 1st administration. This will break the mite life cycle and contribute towards long term mite control.
How does Exzolt work?
Fluralaner (carbamoyl-benzamide-phenyl-isoxazoline), the active ingredient of Exzolt, is a member of the novel antiparasitic compound class of isoxazoline-substituted benzamide derivatives. Once ingested by a mite feeding on a treated chicken, fluralaner acts as a potent inhibitor of parts of the arthropod nervous system by acting antagonistically on ligand-gated chloride channels (GABA-receptor and glutamate-receptor). When mites feed on chickens that have been treated with Exzolt they will quickly die. This breaks the mite life cycle and rapidly reduces mite numbers.
Do owners need to treat their equipment?
Equipment owners use for cleaning their coops, such as brushes, will inevitably be carrying mites, so during treatment they should put these items close to the chickens, so any mites that are hiding will come out and feed on the chickens, and die. Mites will primarily be feeding at night so this is the time to make sure any equipment is close to the chickens.
There is no need to treat equipment with any other antiparasitic products before or after treatment with Exzolt. No repellent substances must be used concurrently with Exzolt.
What should owners do if the red mites return?
Mites can be transferred from newly bought chickens, wild birds and rodents, as well as clothing and equipment. If the mites do return, birds can be retreated after 3 months. The 4ml bottle has a broached shelf life of 6 months so any excess Exzolt can be stored for use as required.
