MSD Animal Health Announces Overall Vet Student Research Bursary Winners at Awards Day

Milton Keynes, June 18, 2019 – MSD Animal Health has awarded prizes to the best research project presentations by veterinary students who had each received one of its research bursaries in 2018. Hosted at its headquarters in Milton Keynes, MSD Animal Health selected Eleanor Robertson from the University of Liverpool for the top £1,000 prize for her exploration on access to and use of antifungal treatments in Ethiopia. Joanna Gillingham, also from the University of Liverpool, won the £500 runner-up prize for her project assessing mineral deficiency in association with fertility in cross breed cows in Sri Lanka.

Presentations were also made on completed research projects by veterinary students Jessica Seale, on Cryptosporidium in UK cattle; and Lucy Yarnold, on Aeromonas in canine Cutaneous and Renal Glomerular Vasculopathy (CRGV) cases. Veterinary surgeons, Dr Jennifer Duncan of the University of Liverpool, and Dr Sarah Caddy from the Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, who had both received MSD Animal Health Vet Surgeon Research Bursaries, also presented details of their recent research and discussed the value of research as part of an evolving career.

Michelle Townley, Veterinary Advisor and Bursary Co-Ordinator at MSD Animal Health comments: “It was an honour to be hosting this day. The presentations were of an extremely high quality, making it very difficult to choose the best two but Eleanor and Joanna’s research stood out as valuable pieces of research that underpins our commitment to the science of healthier animals. It is always a pleasure to witness such enthusiasm amongst our vet students and to also have our vet surgeons here this year which further emphasises the value of research and its long-term contribution to the veterinary profession.”

Applicants were judged on the quality and clarity of their research project, and their ability to clearly communicate their conclusions. Applications for the MSD Animal Health Veterinary Student Research Bursary 2020 will be opened early next year, further information can be found at www.msdahresearchbursary.co.uk
